September 19th, 2001, an FAA employee named James P. Hopkins was fired for independently going through FAA records and reporting to the FBI that Adnan Bukhari had trained at the FAA's academy in Oklahoma City twice, in 1991 and 1998. The Office of Special Counsel reviewed the case and awarded Hopkins his employment back, citing unfair termination.

Between 5:00 and 5:30 on the morning of September 12th, FBI agents backed by a SWAT team stormed Adnan Bukhari's leased house and arrested him, because his identity card and that of an Ameer Bukhari (mistakenly thought to be Adnan's brother) were found in a rental car left in Portland, Maine - a blue Nissan that Mohammed Atta had rented and left in an airport parking lot.

Adnan Bukhari gave lessons to Saudi Arabian Airlines pilots at the FlightSafety Academy in Vero Beach, Florida. As of 2001, Adnan held flight engineer, turbo-jet, mechanic, airframe, powerplant, instrument panel and single-engine landing certificates, as well as a First Class Medical Certificate issued in May of 2000. FBI cleared Adnan of any connection to September 11 attacks.

Ameer Bukhari had died exactly a year before the attacks, on September 11th, 2000, in a midair collision between his Piper Cherokee N9208N and the Piper Aztec N54235 being piloted by Roger Boromei, as both approached the same runway at Saint Lucie International Airport in Fort Pierce, Florida. Both aircraft ended up crashing in a nearby citrus grove. At the time of the crash, Ameer had logged 17.5 hours flight-time since graduating from the FlightSafety Academy in Vero Beach, Florida - where several of the actual hijackers were also reported to have trained. Ameer was cleared of any fault in the post-incident report, which blamed the air controller who had started his shift three minutes earlier.
